GENERAL DIRECTIONS:

  • All essays are to be typed in 12 point font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, and with citations and other formatting also done in MLA documentation style. (Note: you may use another documentation style, such as APA, but you must notify me at the start of the semester what you plan to us.)
  • You must write and submit your essays via KSU Google Docs.
  • Be sure to put your last name and the assignment in the document label (upper left corner), for example: Smith’s Essay One, or Jones’ Essay Two.
  • You are also encouraged to save a copy of the paper (download it) to your personal computer.

  • Read carefully and then choose one of the following topics and compose a complete essay that is 1000-2000 words (3-6 pages)  long.  TOPICS:
    1. Read and view the materials provided for Topic 1: Look Up! What is writing style?  How do voice, tone, and diction affect writing style?  In addition to drawing from at least three of the materials (articles, videos, and/or images) of this particular reading topic, to illustrate your points, also make use of either Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” or Alice Walker’s “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens”.  You may make cite both works by Tan and Walker, but you must also cite at least three works from Topic 1. (Thus, your paper should be citing at least four works, total.)
    2. Read and view the materials provided for Topic 2: Propaganda, Free Speech, and Satire.  What is the difference, in your opinion, between a work of art and a work of craft? In addition to drawing from at least three of the materials (articles, videos, and/or images) of this particular reading topic, to illustrate your points, also make use of either Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” or Alice Walker’s “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens”.  You may make cite both works by Tan and Walker, but you must also cite at least three works from Topic 2. (Thus, your paper should be citing at least four works, total.)
    3. Read and view the materials provided for Topic 3: The Science and Art of Language and Communication. Consider how communication, including language, affects your world. Discuss this in a logical fashion, with analysis and reason.  In addition to drawing from at least three of the materials (articles, videos, and/or images) of this particular reading topic, to support your points, be sure to analyze this world from the perspective of at least one of the following works:
      • Alice Walker’s “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens”
      • Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue”
      • Mary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone”
      • Iris M. Young’s “Five Faces of Oppression”
      • Michel Foucault’s “Panopticism”
